Farewell, Derek Shephard

If you haven’t seen last night’s heart-wrenching episode of Grey’s Anatomy, then perhaps you should stop reading this. If you’re a fan of spoilers, then by all means, proceed with caution.

A television series is only as good as it’s characters. With that being said, I’m without a doubt, a sucker for sappy television couples. Ross and Rachel, Carrie and Big, Buffy and Angel, Joey and Pacy: I could honestly go on for hours. These are all examples of the tumultuous, yet endearing; onscreen relationships which kept me watching week and after week. After all, there’s a sense of comfort which comes with watching a couple’s relationship, develop into something deep, and meaningful onscreen.

Over time, these individuals become something of a family to you, conjuring up emotions so utterly sincere and genuine.  So, it’s no wonder we find ourselves crying like two-year-olds, when one of those family members suddenly passes away. Case and point, last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy.

After spending an entire week wondering #WhereIsDerek, the answer to that mystery was unveiled during last night’s episode. Apparently, Derek was hit by a truck (I know, brutal) while helping victims of a freak car crash on the side of the road. This answered the question as to why he missed his meeting and all Meredith’s phone calls were going to voicemail. I’ll admit, I had the slightest inkling that something drastic was going to occur, as is usually the case on a hospital show. But I was vastly underprepared for what followed next.

Once Derek was rushed to the Seattle Grace, there wasn’t much the doctors could do, and our McDreamy was left in a vegetative state; promoting Meredith to make the extremely difficult decision of taking him off life support. I usually watch the show with my mom, who is also a huge McDreamy fan, and it was safe to safe we were both left in tears once the episode ended.

You haven’t lived until you’ve sobbed in front of your mother, over the death of a fictional television character.

I don’t think I sobbed that much since watching The Red Wedding on Game of Thrones. But the most excruciating part was probably the melancholy rendition of Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars”, plying in the background, while images of Meredith and Derek’s life together played out; including the scene when they first met.  If you’re a total fan of the show, you would remember that, that very exact song, was playing during Izze’s farewell to Denny, during the first season finale.

In fact, the entire scene played out rather similar to that very exact one. That alone was enough to send  me over the edge to an emotional point of no return. However, I should have seen this coming. After all, the show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes, is no stranger to plot lines which are completely forlorn. Remember Lexie’s and George’s deaths? Not to mention the multiple other unnecessary deaths during the show? Ooof, talk about depressing plot twists.

Yet, despite all the unfortunate passings and heartbreaking plot lines, I still came back. A large part of that was the love story between Meredith and Derek. Their relationship was like a shining beacon of hope and consistency. No matter what happened on the show, you could always rely on Meredith and Derek for continuity. Now that Derek is now gone, I’m not entirely sure what the future has in-store for Grey’s Anatomy. Ellen Pompeo, who plays Meredith, and Richard Webber, who plays Richard; are the only two original characters on the show now.

But I guess in the world of television, change is inevitable. I merely wish that change didn’t involve Patrick Dempsey. Only time will tell what the future holds for one of the most-watched series on television. Until then, RIP Derek Shephard, you will be greatly missed.

I am a journalistic enthusiast, born and bred in Washington, D.C. When I'm not busy meticulously constructing posts, I can be found burying my head in an epic novel, cooking a delicious mess in the kitchen, scouring local thrift stores, and spending way too much time binging on Netflix (Arrested Development anyone?). I cannot live without a good playlist (Billy Holiday is preferred), working wifi (sometimes not always working), and Dunkin Donuts coffee (caramel swirl is my go-to flavor).
