That 70’s Show

If you’ve been paying close attention to the trends coming out of NYFW, then you’d know that the 70’s are having their moment. Everything from fringed detailing, knee-high boots, and DVF’s iconic wrap dress have all played an incredibly important part in the overall look. But there’s only one item which has left me utterly astound, with tiny stars glistening in my light brown eyes. That particular look is none other than flared denim. If you’re familiar with the late 60’s and early 70’s, then you’re aware of the essential role flared denim played during that time.

Everyone from Jane Birkin to Laura Hutton was spotted donning the look, looking every bit like the sophisticated 70’s queens they were. Shows such as Tory Burch and Creatures of the Wind all incorporated the look into their collections, with an underline bohemian vibe thrown in. Being a skinny jeans girl myself, I found it slightly hard to wrap my head around the overall trend. I like the fit of skinny jeans and the slimming effect the provide. However, that’s not to say I don’t own a few pairs of flared denim myself.

They’re stored away, somewhere in the back of my wardrobe, waiting for me to unleash them onto to the public. As I searched for inspiration from vintage photos of Brigitte Bardot and Francois Hardy donning the look, I found myself growing more fond of the trend. Not to mention it totally fits the bill with this whole “70’s bohemian rocker” look I’m trying emulate at the moment. I guess my skinny jeans are just going to have to deal.

I am a journalistic enthusiast, born and bred in Washington, D.C. When I'm not busy meticulously constructing posts, I can be found burying my head in an epic novel, cooking a delicious mess in the kitchen, scouring local thrift stores, and spending way too much time binging on Netflix (Arrested Development anyone?). I cannot live without a good playlist (Billy Holiday is preferred), working wifi (sometimes not always working), and Dunkin Donuts coffee (caramel swirl is my go-to flavor). If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to direct them to the email below. Happy Reading!
